The State of AI Report 2019

The AI industry has developed to the point where a comprehensive, yet accessible, guide to recent progress in AI research, industry applications, talent and politics is needed.

To this end, Ian Hogarth and Nathan Benaich have created The State of AI Report to help inform public discussion on where AI technology is at and where we might be heading in the next 12 months.

Consider this report as a compilation of the most interesting things we’ve seen that seeks to trigger an informed conversation about the state of AI and its implication for the future. This edition builds on the inaugural State of AI Report 2018, which can be found here.

We consider the following key dimensions in our report:

  1. Research: Technology breakthroughs and their capabilities.

  2. Talent: Supply, demand and concentration of talent working in the field.

  3. Industry: Large platforms, financings and areas of application for AI-driven innovation today and tomorrow.

  4. China: With two distinct internets, we review AI in China as its own category.

  5. Politics: Public opinion of AI, economic implications and the emerging geopolitics of AI.
